Prof. Dr. Dilruba Akter

FCPS (Obs & Gynae)
Professor & Head of Department of Obs & Gynae Prof. Dr. Dilruba Akter has been working in ICMH for 29 years.
She received more than 28 trainings related to maternal and Child Health. She has earned vast experience and reputation in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Professor Dilruba is especially trained in Gynecological laparoscopy and Infertility in home and abroad.
She is also a course co-ordinator of MS Residency course. She has long experience in teaching post graduate student and conducting many training as a coordinator and facilitator at different levels.
She is a good researcher and her 26 research activities as a principal author and co-author was published in different national and international medical journals.

At a Glance

The Department of Obstetric and Gynaecology is one of the major contributors in improving Maternal and Neonatal Health and also upgrading this institute in both Service and Human Resource Development.

The activities of this department include curative & preventive aspects of reproductive health to achieve the goal of ICMH. Now we are providing services focused on general obstetrics and gynaecology including Adolescent Clinic, VIA Center, Colposcopy Center, Infertility Centre, High Risk Patient Care Center,  Lactation Management Centre and Family Planning Services.

At present, there are two post graduate courses- DGO and MS (Residency and Non residency Course).

The department is adequately staffed with experienced Faculties, Registrars, Assistant Registrars, Emergency Medical Officers, Honorary Medical Officers, Nurses and Other Staffs.

The spectrum of activities is continuously resolving the tremendous problems of maternal and perinatal health through both community and hospital based approaches. The outpatient department is performing their excellent job includes Counseling on Prevention of Adolescent Pregnancy, Antenatal Care, Birth Planning, Postnatal Care, Awareness Regarding Cancer Prevention along with routine care.

Emergency Services are provided round the clock covering seven days of the week.

The pregnant women and mothers with gynaecological & some medical problems are managed in different rooms for primary management and referred to consultant for admission and management of complicated cases.

Clinical Facilities, Services & Activities

Obstetric Inpatient

The inpatient department has a capacity of 85 beds but accommodating on an average

above 90 cases. There are 10 cabins in the department.

Clinical examination of the patients is being performed in the procedure room adjacent to

the ward to maintain privacy.

Bedside urine examination is done for all required cases 24 hours a day.Ultrasonography is being done routinely for the selected cases to assess fetal well being

in a separate procedure room.

Labour delivery room (LDR) with 4 labour tables , 3 observation beds and 3 eclampsia

beds. All women with labour are receiving childbirth assistance here by trained skilled birth attendants, nurses or doctors round the clock. Nursing station is located in the centre of LDR. It is unique, that the nursing in charge can monitor all patients from central desk. CS OT is located within the LDR for facilitating immediate management of obstetric emergencies.

Cardiotocography (CTG) is used for fetal monitoring in the LDR. Registrars and

postgraduate students do CTG for the referred pregnant cases.

In 1st floor there are two functioning operation theaters at present.Almost one fifth of total patients admitted with gynaecological diseases and almost all

types of gynaecological operations including endoscopic surgery is being performed regularly.

Outpatient Department

Outpatient department (OPD) consist of eight consultation rooms and special clinics for adolescents, colposcopy, visual inspection by acetic acid (VIA), clinical breast examination (CBE), infertility and reproductive tract infection (RTI) care including facilities for Pap’ smear. There are full fledged lactation management centre, family planning clinic and a day care operation theatre (OT) in the out patient where services are rendered as day care basis.

 

Services

The department renders 24-hour emergency and routine obstetric services as well as routine gynaecological case management including surgery like hysterectomy, myomectomy, salphingoophorectomy, D&C, MVA as well as specialized services like tubal surgery including re-canalization & laparoscopic surgery, Hysteroscopy, colposcopy in colposcopy clinic, Day care surgery, Lactation management in LMC and family planning services.

Research Activities

The department of OBGYN participated very actively in research works of ICMH. In collaboration with other departments, this department initiated the Rupganj nutrition research project. Since then all the academic staffs of the department are engaged in various research programs actively.

Academic Activities

1. Morning session – Thrice weekly
2. Journal club-every Saturday morning - During this session working doctors present articles from printed and online journals on issues of current interest and debate. Discussions are held regarding research works and application in own context.
3. Continuing professional development (CPD) on Wednesday from OBGYN department.
4. Monthly Statistics are presented on third Thursday of every month. Mortality, Severe acute maternal morbidity (SAMM) and discussion on referred cases are regularly conducted on fourth Thursdays of every month. Case presentations are discussed on every other Thursday.

Training Activities

All the faculties & registrars facilitate different govt. & non govt. organized training in ICMH in addition to services and research. Senior & trained assistant registrars involved in training of community skill birth attendants. They also work as clinical trainer in LDR & teach the trainee to attain skill on the basis of check lists. Faculties also work as course coordinators of different training like breast feeding counseling, reproductive health, HIV and AIDS, Ca cervix, VIA etc.

Lactation Management Center (LMC)

This centre provides services for those mothers who are facing difficulties in lactation as well as different breast problems. These problems are managed with correction of position and attachment, expression of breast milk, Oketani breast massage technique. Nurse midwives working in this centre also help to relactate the mothers who stopped breast feeding for 2 to 6 months. Record keeping is being maintained for all the mothers attending here.
